Your Camping Gear Could Be the Key to Surviving a Natural Disaster

campDo you love to go camping? If you have the right gear available, then it might just save your life in the event of a natural disaster. Few people today are ready to survive for any length of time after a disaster. Let’s look at some of the most common types of camping gear that people own to get a better idea of how prepared you might be, as well as some other gear you might want to buy. Personally, I live like a king when I camp. It makes it all that much more fun!

Sleeping Bags

Sleeping bags are often easier to carry than blankets since you can roll them up and attach them to a pack. Thick and warm, they’ll help retain your body heat. In many disasters when the power goes out or you’re displaced, sleeping bags can help keep you alive and comfortable.

Propane Camp Stove

There’s a good chance the power will go out during a disaster and you won’t be able to use your electric stove. Gas stoves can be too dangerous to use. A propane stove is a viable option. You can use it to cook, heat up water and more. A warm meal can make all the difference when everything else seems so bleak.

First Aid Kit

The first aid kit should be a bit heftier than just a few Band-Aids and some aspirin. Having a variety of bandages, medicines, tweezers, suture kits and more can ensure you are ready for anything.

Snacks, MREs and Water

Having snacks on hand such as trail mix can keep you going when hiking or trying to get through a disaster. Some MREs, canned food and water are important as well. Naturally, you will have these stored when you head out on your camping trips. Always make sure you have a bit extra in case you need to evacuate or shelter in place.

Miscellaneous Items

Consider some of the other miscellaneous items that you generally take out camping. A tent or tarp, a good knife, a hatchet, compass, matches, other fire-starting materials and even sunscreen will come in handy. If you have canned food, a small can opener is a good idea. Even if you don’t have canned food now, there is a chance you could find some later and need the opener. A P38 is a great can opener that you can pick up at any Army surplus supply store. It’s only an inch long and opens anything.

Your camping gear has the potential to be very helpful if you suddenly find yourself in a survival situation after a disaster. Go through the gear you have and check it to ensure all of it is in good working order. You should also consider adding some other gear that you don’t have to your list of supplies. Having more than you need pays off whether you’re camping or trying to survive.

Test Yourself
