Using Your Car to Help You Survive

116 - CopyYour car is more than just a way for you to get to and from work. It could play a large role in your survival in the event of a natural disaster. Let’s look at some of the ways that your vehicle will be able to help you, as well as some of the things that you need to have in your car’s emergency kit to make survival even easier.

How Does Your Car Help You?

First, consider the fact that most people today communicate through their cell phones and their computers. In the event of a disaster, it could mean there is no power. Phones and computers rely on power. Fortunately, your car is a source of power, and you will be able to charge your phone and even your computer in some cases. This makes it easier to get up to date information about your family and friends so you can be sure they are okay. Of course, your car will help you get away from danger faster as well.

What Should You Keep in the Car?

You can turn your car into a survival shelter on wheels and no one has to be the wiser. How do you do this? Simply keep certain items in your vehicle so you have them on hand and ready to go in case you need them. Here are some of the most important items you will want to have in the car.

You need your emergency bag with some clothing, some hidden cash, and your basic toiletries. Have enough for a couple of days, just in case you have to leave home for longer than you imagine. Also, have plenty of bottled water in the vehicle. Remember that bottled water can expire, so make sure you are using the old and replacing it with new before it does expire. Additionally, you will want to have food in the car. Make sure the food keeps well and that it doesn’t expire.

A fire extinguisher and a flare gun can come in handy as well. A flashlight, some extra batteries, an extra weather radio, gloves, duct tape, a multi tool and a knife, some blankets, and raingear is quite handy as well, and you will find that all of this should fit into most trunks without too much trouble. Those who live in areas where snow and blizzards are a problem will want to have an ice scraper for the windshield, as well as some cat litter. You can use the cat litter to help get your vehicle unstuck from the snow, since it can provide the tires with a bit more traction.

Don’t Forget the Gas

You never want to be in a situation where you have to evacuate and “get out of Dodge”, and then find that you don’t have enough gas. Think about most survival situations and disasters. You are evacuating, and that means everyone who works at the gas station and other stores are doing the same thing. You will not be able to get gas. You should always try to have at least a half a tank in the car, and you may want to have some extra gas cans on hand just in case. In addition, make sure you keep your car in decent shape, so you do not have to worry about a break down when you are trying to evacuate.

As you can see, when you have the right items in your vehicle, and when you make sure you have gas, it could play an essential role in your ability to survive a natural disaster. #survivaltips
